What you need to know if you are visiting the UK

ETA Requirements for Australians
visiting the UK

Beginning January 8, 2025, Australian citizens planning to visit the United Kingdom for tourism, work, leisure or short term study will need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).  This new requirements form part of the UK’s broader immigration and border control policies aimed at enhancing security and streamlining the entry process for visitors.

What is an ETA?

The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a digital document that serves as a pre-authorization for entry into the UK. It is not a visa but rather a mandatory entry requirement for visa-exempt travellers.

Applications

The application process for an ETA is designed to be straightforward and user-friendly. Applicants can complete the process online through the official UK government website.
The key steps involved are outlined below:
1. Online Applications

Applicants will need to fill out an online form with their personal details, passport information, travel itinerary, and the purpose of their visit. It is essential to provide accurate and truthful information, as any discrepancies may result in the denial of the ETA.

2. Supporting Documents

In most cases, Australian citizens will only need a valid passport to apply for an ETA. However, depending on the purpose of the visit, additional documentation may be required. For example, those traveling for work may need to provide proof of their professional engagements, while students may need to submit evidence of enrolment in a short-term course.

3. Payment of Fees

A non-refundable processing fee will be charged for the ETA application. The fee amount may vary, so it is advisable to check the latest updates on the official UK government website before applying.

4. Processing Time

The processing time for an ETA is typically short, often within 24 to 72 hours. However, applicants are encouraged to apply well in advance of their planned travel dates to allow for any potential delays or additional processing requirements.

5. Receiving the ETA

Once approved, the ETA will be sent to the applicant via email. It is recommended to print a copy of the ETA confirmation and carry it along with the passport when traveling to the UK.

Validity and Duration

An ETA is generally valid for multiple entries within a specified period, usually up to two years or until the passport’s expiration date, whichever comes first. Each visit to the UK under an ETA should not exceed six months.

Entry Procedures
Upon arrival in the UK, Australian citizens with a valid ETA will undergo standard immigration checks. Australian citizens will need to present their passport and ETA confirmation to the immigration officers. It is crucial to comply with all entry conditions and provide any additional information or documentation requested by the immigration authorities.
