ETA Requirements for Australians
visiting the UK
Beginning January 8, 2025, Australian citizens planning to visit the United Kingdom for tourism, work, leisure or short term study will need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). This new requirements form part of the UK’s broader immigration and border control policies aimed at enhancing security and streamlining the entry process for visitors.
The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a digital document that serves as a pre-authorization for entry into the UK. It is not a visa but rather a mandatory entry requirement for visa-exempt travellers.
Applications
Applicants will need to fill out an online form with their personal details, passport information, travel itinerary, and the purpose of their visit. It is essential to provide accurate and truthful information, as any discrepancies may result in the denial of the ETA.
In most cases, Australian citizens will only need a valid passport to apply for an ETA. However, depending on the purpose of the visit, additional documentation may be required. For example, those traveling for work may need to provide proof of their professional engagements, while students may need to submit evidence of enrolment in a short-term course.
A non-refundable processing fee will be charged for the ETA application. The fee amount may vary, so it is advisable to check the latest updates on the official UK government website before applying.
The processing time for an ETA is typically short, often within 24 to 72 hours. However, applicants are encouraged to apply well in advance of their planned travel dates to allow for any potential delays or additional processing requirements.
Once approved, the ETA will be sent to the applicant via email. It is recommended to print a copy of the ETA confirmation and carry it along with the passport when traveling to the UK.
An ETA is generally valid for multiple entries within a specified period, usually up to two years or until the passport’s expiration date, whichever comes first. Each visit to the UK under an ETA should not exceed six months.
